Kinect finds you the perfect jeans at Bloomingdale’s
It’s a great fit in a home entertainment setting, but Microsoft’s Kinect is ready to help you tackle your wardrobe dilemmas, too.
The Kinect sensor burst onto the scene as a revolutionary new way to experience gaming on your Xbox 360. In 2012, it’s evolving into more than an advanced game controller. There were loads of amazing DIY projects that made use of the Kinect last year, like a robotic seeing-eye dog. This year — with the arrival of the Kinect for Windows and an official software development kit from Microsoft — even more futuristic developments are on the way.
This month at Bloomingdale’s, customers will be able to step inside the futuristic fitting room above to find the perfect pair of jeans. It’s called the Pod and it’s been built by a company called Bodymetrics. The Pod uses Kinect sensors to create a three-dimensional model of a customer’s body. Once that process is complete (it takes just five seconds), it can then recommend specific brands and styles that are the best match.
At Bloomingdale’s, The Pod’s recommendations will be passed along to a sales associate. But users can also choose to become Bodymetrics members, which allows them to sign in to a website where they can stock up on flattering denim. While The Pod has the potential to save you time and headaches by helping you steer clear of clothes that just won’t work in a brick-and-mortar store, it’s worth knowing that Bodymetrics has other plans.
They’re working on a home version of their body imaging device, too. Kinect for Windows should be up to the task, and just think of the frustration and time your Bodymetrics scan could save you when you’re shopping on your computer from home. You may never have to wait days for your purchase to arrive only to find out it doesn’t fit properly ever again.
In time, the Bodymetrics Pod might become a common sight in retail stores — and the home version could be a real game-changer for online shopping when it arrives. When they do, they’ll be the perfect companions to the Magic Mirror in your bathroom at home. Hey, if the Kinect is going to help you figure out which clothes fit you best, it might as well assist you when it comes to coordinating your ensemble, too.
