Apple's next iPhone is expected to release in the second quarter of this year, with a bigger and better “retina” display.

South Korean media, the Maeil Business Newspaper, cited anonymous industry sources for its claims that Apple's impending sixth-generation iPhone will feature a 4.6-inch display, significantly larger than the 3.5-inch display on all previous models.

This would put the new model in direct competition with Samsung's Galaxy S II, which has a 4.5-inch display on the Rogers model, and could lead to claims that it is “slavishly copying” Samsung's designs, an accusation that Apple previously levelled at the company.

The display is also expected to feature a higher resolution capable of full high-definition, improving on the existing “retina” display of the iPhone 4S and echoing a similar move made with the latest iPad, which was released at the end of last week.



No other details are known about the device, which will likely follow suit with the new iPad by being called “the new iPhone,” but we can probably expect a faster processor and a bigger battery to cope with the increased power demands, providing it does not lead to the same overheating problems that are plaguing the new iPad.

A release date in the second quarter of the year will mean that the iPhone 4S, which released in October 2011, won't have even been out a full year, which might upset fans who parted with hard-earned cash for a very limited upgrade of features.

An artist's impression from Ciccarese Design shows a different "teardrop" shape for the device, but it is not yet clear if this will be employed for the finished product.
