Atmel's XSense promises curvy touchscreens that'll ruin your shirt line

Atmel XSense Touch Sensors

Touchscreen gurus Atmel may not be the most famous name around, but you'll find its gear inside devices like the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy Tab. Now it has pulled the dust-sheets from the latest innovation to emerge from its Californian headquarters: XSense. It's a flexible, super-thin, film-based touch sensor that can be curved and contorted any which way you choose while retaining accuracy. It'll also enable smartphone makers to create "edgeless" touchscreens without bezels, or have them cascade around the sides of the device.

Now all we have to do is wonder if we really want a notably concave phone jabbing into our thighs, which you can ponder while you watch the concept video we've got for you.

Sony Xperia S now really “shipping globally”

Sony Xperia S shipping globally

Already available in the UK since a few weeks ago, Sony’s Xperia S Android smartphone is now “shipping globally”, the company has announced. And it’s really shipping this time, not like back in February.

Sony doesn’t provide more details on this, simply saying that it’s “giving local operators the chance to tell you about specific availability and pricing in individual markets.” In other words, if you want an Xperia S you can now start looking for it in your own country (except the US, where the handset will most likely not be released; but you’ll have AT&T’s Xperia Ion there).

Sony Xperia S shipping globally

Unlike the Xperia Neo L (officially announced yesterday with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on board), the Xperia S is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Sure enough, an update to ICS is on its way, and should be ready before mid 2012.

Samsung Galaxy S III shifts from Qualcomm to own-brand quad-core processor

Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone Exynos 4412 chip

The forthcoming Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone, which has been the subject of more than a few rumours of the last couple of weeks, will use one of the company's own brand quad-core processors, rather than one by Qualcomm. A "high-ranking" Samsung executive revealed that the new device will switch to the manufacturer's own Exynos processor.

Samsung claims that it has partly made the decision because it is losing faith in Qualcomm. As reported in the Korean Times, the nameless senior executive said, "Samsung has a stronger intent to lower its dependence on Qualcomm and our technicians believe that we have made significant progress in producing logic-based chips for high-end devices, combined logic and memory chips for graphic controllers and core communication chips for Internet-enabled consumer devices.
Samsung is paying huge amounts to Qualcomm in return for using its single-chip solutions in strategic digital devices, however, Qualcomm is gradually losing its edge, he added.

The Exynos 4412 chip - the one that is expected to run the Galaxy S III - will be made with 32-nanometer technology, and is claimed to run 26 per cent faster that the current 45-nanometer version. Battery life is also expected to benefit, being improved by 50 per cent.

Samsung and RIM being sued for allegedly infringing — wait for it — an emoticon patent

Samsung and RIM being sued for allegedly infringing emoticon patent

Research In Motion and Samsung have been hit with a patent infringement suit regarding the emoticon input method used by a number of their mobile devices.

Patent disputes have been flying around the tech world at such a rate lately that you could be easily forgiven for thinking everyone’s suing each other over just about every tech patent in existence. Maybe they are.

The latest dispute to hit the headlines sees Samsung and Research In Motion (RIM) being sued by Varia Holdings for allegedly infringing a patent regarding, of all things, emoticon input on mobile devices. The legal action has no doubt left the Korean and Canadian tech companies feeling rather :-( or even a bit :-S

The 16-page patent, which was filed in 2005 and granted two years later, includes the following:

“It is known that for many users, their email and instant messaging communications….often involve the use of emoticons, such as the ‘smiling face’ or the ‘sad face’. However, few email or instant messaging applications offer any assistance to a user to enter and use emoticons in their communications.”

The so-called “assistance” comes in the form of a quick-access key offering a list of emoticons to the user, and it’s the concept surrounding this function which Varia Holdings claims it owns.

Samsung phones such as the Acclaim, Nexus S, Captivate, Epic, Galaxy Nexus and Transform all infringe the patent, claims Varia Holdings, as well as RIM’s Bold, Curve, Pearl and Storm BlackBerry devices.

Samsung and RIM being sued for allegedly infringing emoticon patent

Though currently held by Varia Holdings, the patent was originally granted to a Seattle-based start-up by the name of Wildseed, which was subsequently bought by AOL. At some stage, a new company called Varia Mobile was spun off from AOL. The new company — believed to be linked to Varia Holdings — was set up by former Wildseed employees, so it’s assumed they retained the emoticon patent when they left AOL.

If Varia Holdings wins its case, it could result in sales of the mobile devices at the center of the dispute being suspended, as well as compensation payments being paid. Documents regarding the lawsuit were filed late last week though no judge has yet been assigned to the case.

Samsung Galaxy 3 PR slide leak (unconfirmed, likely fake)

Samsung Galaxy 3 PR slide leak (unconfirmed, likely fake)

This photo is supposed to show what the new Samsung Galaxy S3 will look like. It’s a rendering, and if we are to believe that this image is real (let’s stretch our imagination for a moment), it seems to have come from a public relations PowerPoint file (WeberShandwick is a PR agency). It’s very unusual because a PR company wouldn’t normally put its logo on there…

According to the leak, Samsung will unveil this new device in London on May 22nd at a Samsung Unpacked event. These “unpacked” have become quite a tradition, so this could very well be true, and a European launch seem plausible as it was the case with the Galaxy S2, and yes, despite its reputation for being gloomy, London could be the place.

In terms of design, the phone seems extremely thin (7.89mm – a number that turned out to be bogus), and it seems like a very nice device, even if the white version looks like it has a “bumper” (a reference to Apple’s rubber case) around it. On the image, you can also see that the bezel around the display is becoming ever thinner. It’s hard to believe that Samsung would go for this black ring around the white phone. It seems like a design faux-pas, and this undermines the credibility of this leak, in my view.

Samsung Galaxy 3

In any case, note that this is yet different from an earlier leak, that didn’t feature the “Home” button on the phone. The lack of home button would be consistent with what was started by the Galaxy Nexus. I am personally in favor of a button-less phone (except for volume and power). This is another detail that seems inconsistent with a next-gen Galaxy S handset.

Unfortunately, the launch date is potentially the most interesting thing in this rumor. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is about to attain “mythical” status by getting as high on the rumor mill as the iPhone itself. If you remember, the Galaxy S2 was announced at mobile world congress and launched in May. Is it time to prepare for impact? What’s your take and what do you expect from a Galaxy S3?
