Although we’ve heard not long ago that Samsung’s next generation Galaxy flagship smartphone – most likely called Galaxy S III – would come with a 1.8GHz dual-core processor, this may not be the case.

A recent article published by Korean website ETNews implies that Samsung will use a quad-core processor for the Galaxy S III. And this certainly makes sense, since HTC – one of Samsung’s main Android competitors – is allegedly also preparing quad-core smartphones for next year (the Edge and the Zeta). Moreover, it looks like Samsung is already testing a quad-core processor that will be part of its Exynos series.

Other things to expect from the Galaxy S III: a large HD (1280 x 720) Super AMOLED Plus display, LTE connectivity, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS is definitely a go, not just because Samsung made the world’s first handset to run it, but also because any high-end Android phone of next year would make no sense with an older version of the OS) . Previous rumors had it that the new Galaxy S III would also feature a 12MP camera, and 2GB of RAM – these would obviously add weight to its flagship status.

According to ETNews, Samsung is also working to include 3D technologies in its smartphones – not just 3D displays, but also 3D photo and video recording (nothing new here, of course), plus some sort of integration with 3D TVs. Apparently, the company hasn’t decided yet whether the Galaxy S III will have 3D capabilities or not. In any case, another new handset, reportedly called Samsung Galaxy S 3D, could be released in the second half of 2012.

Earlier this year, LG, Samsung’s Korean archrival, was the first to announce a 3D Android smartphone: the LG Optimus 3D. HTC has also introduced the HTC Evo 3D. Both these devices have 3D displays, and can take 3D photos and videos.

Needless to say, for now none of the details regarding the Galaxy S III and Galaxy S 3D are confirmed. But a new Galaxy S is certainly in the making, and it’s most probably going to be unveiled at MWC 2012 (February 27 – March 1), maybe at the same time with that mysterious Samsung N8010. We’ll be there to check out whatever Samsung has to show off.
