The Sony Xperia Pepper that we’ve seen quite a few times until now has been officially announced today as the Sony Xperia Sola.

The Xperia Sola is Sony’s first handset to come with “floating touch navigation.” This lets you browse the web by hovering your finger above the screen (hence without touching it). It’s an interesting idea, but it remains to be seen how it works in real life.

Other than that, the Sola features a 3.7 inch scratch-resistant FWVGA (854 x 480) Reality Display with Mobile Bravia Engine, HSPA, Wi-Fi, NFC, Xperia SmartTags, GPS, direct access to Sony Entertainment Network, xLOUD and 3D surround sound, 5MP rear camera with sweep panorama and 720p video recording, dual-core 1GHz ST-Ericsson U8500 processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory, MicroSD card support (up to 32GB), and a 1,320 mAh battery. It runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, upgradeable to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Sony Xperia Sola weighs 107 grams, measures 116 x 59 x 9.9 mm, and will have three color versions: black, white, and red. The smartphone should be launched around the world “this summer”. It will be called Sony Xperia MT27i in China, and Sony Xperia Sole in Italy. Below you have an official promo video of the handset:
