You can ask your smartphone to help you hide dead bodies, or swing an invisible lightsaber like a giddy 12 year-old on a Lucky Charms sugar high, but setting up a wireless router still requires logging on to a website and fiddling with complex settings. Securifi is a new startup that wants to bring critical networking gear up to speed with the rest of your tech. Their slogan, “routers for humans” sums it up nicely, and the Almond is a step in the right direction.

Thanks to an integrated 2.8″, 320 x 240 screen, the Almond can walk users through setting up and maintaining a network all on its own. At $70, it’s also relatively affordable. There are some noteworthy sacrifices, however, that come with life on the bleeding edge. Most notably, it’s only a single-band N-router, so it won’t work on the 5Ghz spectrum. It also features only two LAN ports. These factors are definitely deal-breakers for networking junkies running World of Warcraft guild out of mom’s basement, but they shouldn’t affect those just looking to get their tablet or smartphone online. Expect this to launch in the coming weeks.
