Pentax Optio WG-2 Digital Camera Specifications and Pictures
The new Pentax Optio WG-2 camera—available in versions with and without a built-in GPS—is a rugged shooter that can grab 16-megapixel photos in 40 feet of water, survive a 5-foot drop, operate in temperatures as low as 14°F, and is crushproof to 220 pounds of force.
The camera captures action with a 5x (28-140mm equivalent) zoom lens that can focus on objects that are only a centimeter away. In addition to a standard flash, the WG-2's lens is surrounded by six LED lights, emulating the traditional ring flashes that macro photographers often employ.
The camera uses a CMOS sensor, which promises to deliver better-quality images at high ISO settings—it supports a maximum setting of ISO 6400—as well as 1080p30 video recording. Stabilization is provided by Pentax's Triple Shake Reduction system, which uses three different types of digital processing to reduce the amount of blur in photos and video. The 3-inch rear LCD features 460k dots of resolution, twice that of the previous generation WG-1. The camera ships with a carabiner strap so you can attach it to your backpack, as well as a Macro Stand for close-up work.
The WG-2 will be available in black and red for $349.95. If you opt for the WG-2 GPS version of the camera your color choices are limited to orange or white, and the cost increases to $399.95. Both cameras will be available in March, along with a $49.95 SportMount Chest Harness accessory for shooters who need both hands free when enjoying the great outdoors.
Pentax also announced new software for its 645D digital medium format camera. Priced at $199.95, the Image Transmitter application for Windows 7, Mac OS X 10.6, and OS X 10.7 makes it possible to tether the camera to your computer via USB. Photos will stream to the computer as you shoot them, and you'll also be able to fire the shutter from the software. English and Japanese language versions will be included on the CD, which is set to ship in March.
