The arrival of the new DisplayLink DL-3000 powered adapter certainly falls into the category of "better late than never". It's been nearly a year since DisplayLink has rolled out the USB 3.0 boosted video chip series but it wasn't until recently that OEMs started adopting the ICs. The latest Targus USB 3.0 Dual Video Card, as the name suggests, offers not one but two HD video ports. One of them is DVI and the other is HDMI, capable of carrying 6-channel surround audio as well as supporting HDCP 2.0. This upgrade makes it possible to playback protected content (e.g. iTunes HD video and Blu-ray movies) thru the Targus adapter's HDMI, provided you're running Windows 7.

The Targus USB 3.0 Dual Video Card is the industry's first to use DisplayLink DL-3900 in a display-only product. As the DL-3900 is the highest end model in the family, it also boasts Gigabit Ethernet and dual head outputs with a maximum resolution of 2048 x 1152. It is therefore recommended for docking stations so it's interestingly to see the rather costly DL-3900 in the Targus bus-powered adapter. This is a high-end USB 3.0 peripheral that warrants its rather hefty asking price of $99, provided you want to expand your desktop estate effortlessly with two additional HD displays.
