Photographers with a need for speed can soon get even faster XQD memory cards from Sony.

The new XQD memory card format, which boasts real-world write and read speeds of about 125MB/s, is intended to succeed the CompactFlash format used in high-end digital cameras. Besides its high data transfer rates, these XQD memory cards also promise greater reliability.

Sony claims that when used with compatible high-end DSLR cameras, such as Nikon's new D4, "XQD memory cards can record approximately up to 100 frames in RAW format in continuous shooting mode". These memory cards will come in 16GB and 32GB capacities and cost US$130 and US$230 respectively.

To ensure that you can transfer data between the new memory cards and your computer, Sony is selling a USB 2.0/3.0-compatible XQD card reader for US$45. There will also be an XQD ExpressCard adapter. The memory cards and its related peripherals will be available worldwide next month, which coincides with the expected availability of the Nikon D4.
