Samsung Series 7 Chronos 17-inch Video Hands-on: JBL Sound, Sweet HD Screen
LAS VEGAS — Big, beautiful and powerful, the Samsung Series 7 Chronos 17-inch gives the 17-inch MacBook Pro a run for its money. Coming soon for $1,499, this desktop replacement laptop will feature a next-generation Core i7 processor and ATI graphics with 2GB of video memory inside an elegant design. The lid and deck are aluminum, while the bottom is made of color-matched plastic (Samsung says to keep temps down).
We spent a few minutes at CES 2012 with this new Chronos and liked what we saw–and heard. Check out our hands-on video and photo gallery below.Above the keyboard on the left side you’ll see that the Series 7 Chronos 17-inch has a JBL speaker system, and the notebook has a subwoofer down below for supplying extra audio oomph. When we fired up a couple of tracks in the middle of the very noisy Las Vegas Convention Center, we could easily hear the speakers.
One of the best features of the Chronos 17-inch is its SuperBright display, which has a matte finish and full 1080p resolution. The backlit keyboard was comfy, and the clickpad huge and smooth to operate.
All in all, the Series 7 Chronos 17-inch looks like it could be the premium desktop replacement of choice for media mavens. It doesn’t have aluminum all the way around–and we don’t know how much battery life it will offer–but for a grand less than the 17-inch MacBook Pro, it looks pretty solid.
Editors’ Note: The video incorrectly states the Chronos has Nvidia graphics.
