In what feels like the first positive news from Olympus in some time, the company has announced the launch of its first motorized zoom Micro Four Thirds lens. The M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-50mm f/3.5-6.3 EZ gives your PEN or Lumix G the equivalent of a 24-100mm lens on a 35mm camera, giving you a wide angle to 4.2x zoom range. That's pretty versatile when compared to the only other MFT power zoom lenses on the market from Panasonic, which run either from 14-42mm or 45-175mm (28-84mm and 90-350mm full-frame equivalent, respectively).

Olympus says it designed the power zoom mechanism with video work in mind, making the servo powering the lens quiet enough not to interfere with your recording. Besides the zoom controller, the lens also offers a macro shooting mode and a button to temporarily disable autofocus when necessary. Olympus promises that the lens is dust and splash proof, too, and is set to launch at the end of January for ¥49,875 (about $640).
