So far only two Ultrabooks have made it to the market, Asus' Zenbook and Acer's Aspire S3, but now it looks like Toshiba is getting ready to join in with its dynabook R631 in Japan. That said we're expecting it to carry the Portégé brand outside of Japan, as is generally the case for its ultra-thin notebooks, although we don't know the specific series as yet, but we're expecting an announcement in a day or two.

The dynabook R631 looks set to be ver similar to what we've seen so far from Asus and Acer and at least in Japan, Toshiba will only offer a single SKU to start with. That said, we're looking at fairly decent spec with a 1.6GHz Core i5-2467M CPU, 4GB of RAM which appears to be at least upgradeable to some degree as it consist of 2+2GB and a 128GB SSD of unknown brand. The R631 is a 13.3-inch model, but sadly we're not looking at a high-resolution screen as with the Asus Zenbook, instead we get stuck with a typical 1,366x768 panel. Graphics is of course handled by Intel's integrated HD 3000 graphics.

Other features include Intel 802.11b/g/n with support for WiDi and in Japan you also get WiMAX. Then there's a D-sub connector, an HDMI port, a USB 3.0 port, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, a pair of audio jacks, an SD card slot, a 1.3Megapixel webcam and finally a finger print reader for biometric security. Toshiba claims up to 9h battery life with a 3h recharge time. The R361 weighs in at 1.12kg and measures 316x227x8.3-15.9mm (WxDxH) which Toshiba claims makes it the world's thinnest and lightest Ultrabook to date.

There's one problem with the dynabook R631 though and that's the price tag, as it's up for pre-order for a whopping 139,800 Yen (S$2,275/US$1,798) making it not just the thinnest and lightest Ultrabook, but also by far the most expensive Ultrabook in the market. It'll be interesting to see how the international version compares in terms of cost, but hopefully it'll be a bit more affordable.
