Nvidia 3D Vision 2 has just been announced, the update to its stereoscopic 3D Vision system hopefully bringing further improvements in the glasses and display department.

Nvidia 3D Vision 2 not only adds larger-lensed glasses but also brings Nvidia 3D LightBoost, a new display technology that should make for a "bright and rich" 3D experience.

"Gorgeous, bright, crystal-clear 3D worlds are created by Nvidia’s 3D Vision 2 glasses with 3D LightBoost monitors and notebooks," said Phil Eisler, general manager of 3D Vision at Nvidia. "Nvidia’s engineering team has made incredible enhancements in 3D on PCs, creating a breathtaking gaming experience that’s better than the best Hollywood 3D movie."

The active shutter, IR wireless glasses included are now 20 per cent larger than those in first-generation glasses, resulting in a wider viewing area and increased external light blocking. The 3D Vision 2 glasss are also made of soft composite materials so should be super-comfy during any marathon gaming session.

Onto the Nvidia 3D LightBoost, and this new display technology delivers up to 2x brighter 3D images than existing 3D solutions and improved colour quality. It also dramatically increases environmental lighting, making gaming keyboards and mice more visible and reducing 3D ghosting.

This is a welcome update to the older system as it was often difficult seeing any peripherals whilst using the glasses, let alone any snackage that you were hoping to munch on.

There's only one monitor that currently that plays nicely with LightBoost, the Asus VG278H, a 27-inch (1920x1080) monitor, featuring a 3D HDMI 1.4 input, as well as a Dual-link DVI input for full HD 1080p 3D gaming. However, Acer and BenQ models should be on their way in the next few months.

The 3D Vision 2 glasses kit, which includes one pair of Nvidia 3D Vision 2 glasses and a wireless USB IR emitter, will be available from the leading retailers worldwide in October for $149. It will also be available on the Nvidia online store. Extra Nvidia 3D Vision 2 glasses are available for $99.
