Ignoring any design sense, RIM has released the Porsche Design P'9981 BlackBerry smartphone. Though the P'9981 has a legendary motor vehicle maker's name attached to it, it is pretty much a dressed-up Bold 9900, with a dressed-up price tag to match.

Sporting a look only a mother could love, the P'9981 features a stainless steel frame, hand-wrapped leather back cover, a QWERTY keyboard with individually sculpted keys, and a "crystal clear" touchscreen. Internally, the P'9981 is the same as the Bold 9900, with a 1.2GHz processor, HD video recording capabilities, NFC support, and 8GB of on-board storage. It supports microSD cards up to 32GB in capacity.

The P'9981 runs BlackBerry OS 7, though it has been customized by Porsche's design department. Pre-loaded is the Wikitude World Browser augmented reality app, and the P'9981 has an exclusive PIN that helps its owners identify other P'9981 owners.

Owning the P'9981 won't come cheap, despite its not-so-lovely looks. Customers who really want it can find it in Porsche Design stores later this year for an expected price tag of about $2,000. I guess you really can't buy good design sense.
